Musical Ear and Improvisation

Musical ear

  1. Try to tune your guitar using your ears as much as possible. If you have an amplifier then you can make tuning easier by turning up the volume. At high volumes you can easily hear the wobbling sound produced whilst tuning one string to another. This wobbling sound should slow down as you approach the correct tuning.
  2. Don't always resort to tabs; try to work things out for yourself. If you can tell whether a note is higher or lower in pitch then you can work out music by trial and improvement.

Improvisation

  1. Playing over other people's songs can help your improvisation skills. Find the key that a piece of music is in and solo over the top. Experiment with soloing in different keys and scales. This may seem difficult but just give it a go and ideas can emerge, also it is great fun when you get good at it.
  2. Creativity is a skill not just developed through music. Creativity in other fields like artistic ability can improve your overall ability. Open up to all forms of creativity.
